Default Please Help! GC holder re-entry to US after 1 year in Japan

Please Help! Our family has been living/vacationing in Japan for 12 months (arrived here on Nov. 10 2005) and now we want to return to the U.S.A. on December 4th (At that point we will have been in Japan almost 13 months). The issue is that my wife is a green card holder and we did not know that we had to get a re-entry permit before we left. How can we get back into the U.S.A.? Can she just use her Japanese passport? Will they take her green card? Any advice or help would be appreciated and I apologize if this has been asked before, I did try to search for a similar question but did not find one.
